This is one of the hardiest plants we sell! It’s a tough North American native with a fragrant and beautiful white bloom in the spring maturing into bitter-sweet cherries in the fall.

Chokecherries are adaptable to almost any soil type and can tolerate both under and over-watering and can grow in any county in MT.

    USDA Hardiness Zone: 2a

Lilacs are one of the most beautiful, fragrant and hardy shrubs we carry. They are a common sight around old Montana ranches and homesteads because of their toughness, adaptability and wonderful smelling purple springtime flowers.

Lilacs do well in full sun and can withstand very exposed planting conditions. Originally bred in Europe, many Lilac varieties are well adapted to Montana’s harsh climate.

Lilacs are not picky about dry or wet conditions and are adaptable to different soil types. We carry multiple different varieties of lilacs including but not limited to; Common, beauty of Moscow, Katherine Havemyer, Charles Joly, Monge, President Grevy, etc.

  • Red Osier Dogwood - (Cornus sericea)

    Red Osier Dogwood

    (Cornus sericea)
    Height: 6–8 feet
    Spread: 5–10 feet
    USDA Hardiness Zone: 2a

This small, water-loving shrub has a bright red bark that’s impossible to miss. It’s a great all-purpose plant that generally prefers wetter areas like ditches and riverbeds, but is adaptable to a variety of moisture gradients, climatic conditions and soil types.

Dogwoods have a white bloom changing to white berries with the season. Their light green summer leaves become a red fall blush.

The red bark is brightest in early spring when there is little other color around making this bush showy all year round.

  • Rocky Mountain Maple - (Acer glabrum)

    Rocky Mountain Maple

    (Acer glabrum)
    Height: 15–20 feet
    Spread: 10–15 feet
    USDA Hardiness Zone: 4a

The Rocky Mountain Maple is an understory tree native to the mountain valleys of North America.

These maples have a bright red fall color and beautiful red samaras (seed pods) making this tree a spectacle in the fall.

Commonly used to add a natural, wild look to plantings, Rocky Mountain Maples prefer acidic soil high in organic matter and will struggle in high pH of clay soils. Wood mulch can be used to increase organic matter and soil acidity.

Being an understory tree, Rocky Mountain Maple also prefers full to partial shade and is an excellent choice for yards with large already established trees.

  • Flame Willow - (Salix ‘Flame’)

    Flame Willow

    (Salix ‘Flame’)
    Height: 10–20 feet
    Spread: 10–15 feet

It is an extremely hardy plant that can tolerate dry conditions but prefers ample moisture.

It’s also not particular about soil pH or soil type, and is very receptive to pruning and shaping.
